Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Program Don't just learn to code. Learn to solve business problems with technology.
Understand a real business problem, design the solution, build the software, add AI where it genuinely helps, deploy it, and improve it with the people who use it. That is the job of a Forward Deployed Engineer, and it is what this program trains you to do.
In person, not online. Taught in our Dharampeth classroom, from software we built and run at The Pride School and Unisoft Technologies.
“Parents keep asking what was taught today, and homework notes get lost. Can we fix this?”

The role
What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?
forward deployed engineer /ˈfɔː.wəd dɪˈplɔɪd ˌen.dʒɪˈnɪə/ noun · FDE
A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works directly with a customer, often on-site, learns how their business actually runs, and builds, deploys and improves the software that solves their problems. Palantir pioneered the role. In 2025, OpenAI and Salesforce set up their own FDE teams to put AI to work inside customer businesses.
| Aspect | Software developer | Forward Deployed Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Starts with | A written requirement or ticket | A business problem, often unclear |
| Works alongside | The product and engineering team | The customer's own team, where the work happens |
| Builds | Features for a product | A working solution for one real operation |
| Uses AI | Mostly as a coding aid | Inside the solution, when it solves the problem better |
| Done means | The code ships | The problem is solved and people use the software |
- 01A programmer writes code.
- 02An engineer builds systems.
- 03An FDE understands the problem, works with the people facing it, and engineers the technology that solves it.
Why now
Why companies want forward deployed engineers now
The role began at Palantir, which embedded its engineers directly with customers. AI made it mainstream: companies building AI products found that the hard part is making the technology work inside a real business, so they started hiring engineers who can sit with the customer and ship.

What FDE job ads actually ask for
We reviewed 203 FDE engineering job postings on 17 companies' own career pages in September 2026 and counted the skills they ask for. The mix of code, customers, integrations, production systems and AI is exactly what this program is built around.
Keyword count of each posting's text, 26 September 2026. Indicative, not a survey: soft skills are phrased in many ways, so they are undercounted.
Companies don't only need people who can code. They need engineers who can understand a problem, work with users and build the technology to solve it. That role is called a Forward Deployed Engineer.
The FDE way
Understand. Analyse. Build. Deploy. Solve.
Every week of the program follows the same loop an FDE runs with a real customer. You don't finish saying “I learned Python, JavaScript and React.” You finish able to take a problem all the way to a working solution.
-
Understand
Sit with the people who have the problem. See how the work really happens, not how the manual says it happens.
Discovery interviews · process mapping · user research
-
Analyse
Find the root cause, not the loudest symptom, and turn the business problem into a requirement you can build.
Root-cause analysis · requirements · data modelling
-
Build
Engineer the solution: front end, back end, database and APIs, with AI where it genuinely helps.
Full stack · SQL · APIs · AI integration
-
Deploy
Ship it to real users on real infrastructure, with logins, permissions, backups and monitoring.
Git · Linux · cloud · security
-
Solve
Check whether the problem actually went away. Collect feedback, fix what hurts and improve.
Feedback loops · iteration · evaluation
Built from real FDE work
Before we taught this role, we did the job.
Since April 2026, Unisoft's CTO Saurabh Joshi has worked as the forward deployed engineer for two organisations we run: The Pride School and Unisoft Technologies. He sits with teachers, counsellors, accountants and HR, finds where the working day breaks down, and ships software that fixes it, working alongside AI coding agents. This program is built from that work.
“I wasn't just writing code. I had to understand how the school and the institute actually operate, find the real problem and build the technology around it.”

School operations platform
The Pride School, Nagpur
The problem: a growing school needed fees, attendance, homework and parent communication in one reliable system that teachers could run from their phones.
Fees and receipts, uniforms, certificates, expenses, timetables and attendance in one system, plus a phone-first daily log where teachers record each period and share the day's summary with parents on WhatsApp.

Institute management
Unisoft Technologies, Nagpur
The problem: leads, admissions, instalment fees and tests had to stay correct while real students and real money moved through them every day.
Admissions and instalment fees with GST receipts, lead tracking with per-counsellor access, class tests and owner analytics, hardened step by step without stopping the business.
-
In testing
Workforce and attendance
Unisoft Technologies, Nagpur
The problem: biometric punches, changing shifts and the company's attendance rules had to be turned into pay that everyone could check.
Biometric attendance import, shift approvals, late-arrival and early-exit rules, and payroll calculations that HR can run and staff can dispute.

Why it's different
Not another coding course
Most courses teach subjects one after another and end with a portfolio project. An FDE is judged on something else: whether the problem went away.
| Aspect | Typical coding course | Unisoft FDE program |
|---|---|---|
| You start with | A finished assignment | A business problem, the way a real client brings it |
| You build | A portfolio project | A solution for a real operation |
| Subjects | Taught one after another, in isolation | Taught inside the problem you are solving |
| AI is | A separate module | A tool you use when it solves the problem better |
| Done means | The code runs | It's deployed, used, and improved from feedback |
“We don't teach you how to build projects for your portfolio. We teach you how to build solutions for real problems.”
Who it's for
Built for people who already chose software, and want more than code
It suits anyone who can already write some code and wants to own a problem end to end, from the first conversation with a user to the deployed solution.
B.Tech / B.E. students (CS, IT)
Turn classroom theory into the ability to take a real problem from discovery to a deployed solution.
BCA / MCA students
Go beyond coding exercises to shipping software that real people use every day.
Working developers
Add AI engineering and full-stack depth, and learn to own a problem, not just a ticket.
IT professionals
Move into a broader role that sits between the business and the technology.
Not for complete beginners. You don't need to be an expert, but you should already know software is the career you want. Starting from zero? Talk to us about a foundation course first.
Quick self-check
Is the FDE program right for you?
Five yes-or-no questions. It takes under a minute.
0 of 5 answered
Answer all five to see where you stand.
Can you already write basic code in any language?
Do you enjoy finding out why something doesn't work?
Are you comfortable talking to non-technical people about their work?
Do you want to see real people use the software you build?
Do you want to build things with AI, not only chat with it?
The outcome
What you'll be able to say at the end
Every project in the program is judged against one standard: can you take a real problem all the way to a solution that people use?
“Give me an operational problem. I can understand it, design a solution, build the software, integrate AI where useful, deploy it and improve it based on user feedback.”
What we promise
The competencies above, deployed work you can demonstrate and explain, and placement support from an institute that has trained students since 2000.

FAQ
Questions students ask about the FDE program
Can't find your answer? Call or WhatsApp +91 95030 05060, or bring your question to the free session.
What is a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)?
A Forward Deployed Engineer is a software engineer who works directly with a customer, often on-site, to understand how their business runs and to build, deploy and improve the software that solves their problems. Palantir pioneered the role, and companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Salesforce and Databricks now run FDE teams to put AI to work inside customer businesses.
Is FDE a real job title or just a buzzword?
It is a real and fast-growing job title. According to Indeed data reported by The Wall Street Journal, FDE job postings grew more than tenfold in 2025 compared with 2024. In September 2026, Google Cloud, Databricks, Notion and HackerRank were advertising FDE roles in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune and Gurugram.
How is an FDE different from a software developer?
A software developer usually builds features for a product from a written requirement. An FDE starts with a customer's business problem, works alongside the people who have it, and is responsible for a working solution they actually use. Palantir, which pioneered the role, describes the FDE's focus as “one customer, many capabilities”.
Who can join the Unisoft FDE program?
B.Tech and B.E. students in CS or IT, BCA and MCA students, working developers and IT professionals. It is not designed for complete beginners: you don't need to be an expert, but you should already know that software is the career you want.
Do I need to know AI or machine learning already?
No. Phase 4 teaches AI engineering from LLM fundamentals through prompt engineering, RAG, vector databases, tool calling and AI agents. You do need programming basics, because AI is taught as an engineering tool you build with.
When does the first batch start, and where?
The first batch starts on 15 October 2026. It is a classroom program at Unisoft Technologies in Dharampeth, Nagpur.
How long is the program and what does it cost?
We share the duration, schedule and fees in the free FDE session or on a call with a counsellor, so you can first check whether the program fits you. Call or WhatsApp +91 95030 05060.
Will I become an FDE after this program?
No course can hand you the title. FDE roles differ between companies, and most FDE job ads ask for some years of experience: in our September 2026 review of 203 postings, the median was five years. The program gives you the competencies, deployed work you can show, and placement support, so you can start in engineering roles that use the same skills and grow into FDE work.
Who designed the program?
Saurabh Joshi, Unisoft's CTO, who has worked since April 2026 as the forward deployed engineer for The Pride School and Unisoft Technologies, and Pratigya Thakur, who founded Unisoft in 2000 and co-founded The Pride School in 2008. The problems in the program come from organisations they run.
What happens in the free FDE session?
It is a free 90-minute career and technology session: what an FDE is and how the role differs from a developer's, the skills it needs, where AI fits, a live business-problem case study, building a small solution together, a career roadmap, and how the program works. Register on this page or WhatsApp +91 95030 05060.
